Ancient period[ edit ] Prijedor’s history as a fortified centre of population can be traced back to the end of the 17th century, but the history of the colonization and culture of the surrounding area is much older, predating the emergence of the town. Numerous prehistoric, ancient and mediaeval archeological sites are evidence of the presence of a variety of different cultures. There are numerous settlements from the prehistoric period , dating back to B. In the pre-Roman and Roman times the area was settled by a large Illyrian tribe Maezaei , a sub-tribe of the Pannonians, renowned for their mining skills. In Ljubija near Prijedor, many Roman age monuments have been found that provide evidence of iron production. In Zecovi there is an Illyrian necropolis from the Iron Age. A legend says that the river Sana was named by the Romans. Ottoman and Austrian period[ edit ] These regions were under Ottoman dominion until About years ago in this part of Bosnia a large number of fortifications were constructed in order to protect often contested borders with Austria. Later on, many fortifications were destroyed during the Austro-Ottoman War as the borders moved towards the east and south in favor of Austria.

A S Black Hawk left and CH Chinook right Army Aviation operated fixed-wing aircraft for a period of almost 50 years, from taking delivery of Cessna s in until 20 November Selection Before training can begin, potential pilots must pass a battery of tests to determine their suitability to fly in the realm of military aviation. This includes aptitude testing, a multitude of hand-eye co-ordination tests, psychological evaluation, and numerous medical examinations including ophthalmological and dental examinations to maximise the quality and service longevity of selected potential future pilots.
Throughout the selection process candidates are continually assessed for their character and suitability as future officers. Afterall, pilots are also officers and must display attributes of responsibility, integrity, professionalism, initiative, leadership, discipline, decisiveness, courage, morality, and loyalty at all times, to both their peers and to the men and women they lead. Suitable applicants are further scrutinised, and only those elite candidates that display the requisite potential are progressed to the next phase of selection, called the Flight Screening Program FSP , to deem if they are suitable to fly in the Army as officers.
The FSP involves a two-week flying course at the Australian Defence Force’s expense and discretion to assess the suitability of the candidate as a potential officer and pilot, in the air environment under conditions of intense flying and instructing. The candidates are also assessed for their officer qualities in addition to their ability to handle their platform in airspace. At RMC-D the cadet studies subjects such as Army tactics, military customs and ethics, drills, first aid, communication, weapons training, service discipline law, and leadership and management training, to name a few.
The BFTS course encompasses both an extensive ground training program such as airmanship, aerodynamics, aircraft systems, aviation medicine, air power, air traffic control, radio, meteorology, navigation, morse code, instrumentation, and cockpit systems, etc. Upon completion of HQC, pilot recruits are awarded their provisional Army flying badge “flying wings” and promoted to the rank of Second Lieutenant if under the SSO scheme. Operational Helicopter Training After being awarded their flying wings, pilot trainees move on to their specific type of aircraft for Operational Helicopter Training.

Joe Baugher describes an interesting history: The starboard maingear ran into the ditch and culvert that ran parallel to the runway, seen under the starboard wingtip and tore the main gear attachments off the spar! I was in Shamattawa for a couple of weeks shortly after the incident to remove engines, propellers, flight controls and equipment from IXZ. After a few months with several different recovery crews sent in, the aircraft was dragged off the airport back into the bush where the hulk is still today.
This would be what one of your contributors saw in the bush close to Shamattawa: The aircraft would probably have been repaired, if it was a little more accessible, but economics dictated that the best plan at that time was to scrap it.

The strong winds drive large waves onshore, eroding beaches and flooding shorelines. Cold high pressure is usually centered over Quebec or northern New England, providing a rich source of cold, dry air into the Mid Atlantic states. Heavy snowfall, sleet, and wind seriously hamper travel, and cause power outages. Forecasting these storms and what weather the region will receive can be difficult.
The heaviest snow generally occurs in a band around 50 miles wide. To the east of that heavy snow, it changes to a mixture of ice and then rain. To the west of the band, snowfall amounts are significantly less. That means that by just moving the center of the storm 50 miles to the east or west will completely change the type and severity of the weather received.

Historic, beloved, star-crossed; however you describe the DC , it was among the better-known jetliners in history — if not always for the best reasons. It was something of a 70s-era icon — a long step down from the or Concorde, perhaps, but a plane that pretty much everybody has heard of, and that many could recognize instantly. The DC had one of the most distinctive silhouettes in airliner history: I was in seventh grade, yet I remember that flight in greater detail than most of what I did two weeks ago.
This was back when AA used to show a camera view of the cockpit on the bulkhead mounted movie screen. During steep approaches or over mountains, the panorama was worthy of an Imax ticket.
